This is the most time-intensive and challenging aspect of the application, and a wise applicant will give him- or herself at least two months to brainstorm, write, and revise his or her personal statement. If the applicant can afford it, admissions consultants are an excellent resource for guidance, but if not, the applicant should always have trusted friends, relatives, and other advisers review his or her statement for their outside perspective. VT: What is the single most important thing applicants should focus on with this application? Christina: The applicant should tell a compelling story, and he or she will need the story to be coherent. So, when we advise our clients, we help them see what story they are trying to tell, and then we ensure that the application materials all point toward that story. This is true for the personal statement, as well as other essays, and the addenda and the resume. VT: What are the biggest mistakes one can make on a Law School application? Christina: There are many potential mistakes applicants can make when applying to law school. They include not preparing sufficiently for the LSAT or not re-taking the LSAT if scores are too low, missing the opportunity to tell a unique and compelling story through the personal statement and letters of recommendation, not following instructions carefully, or having spelling or grammatical errors in the application materials. VT: What do Law School admissions officers look for most in an applicants essays/personal statements? Christina: These essays are the primary opportunity for the student to differentiate him- or herself from other students. They can demonstrate the personal qualities he or she wishes to highlightleadership, innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, servicein a way that goes beyond a bullet point on the resume. The statement is not a place to brag, list achievements, or show off. Rather, it is for an applicant to show what motivates him or her and why it compels him or her to seek admission to law school and pursue law as a career. VT: Is there anything on a students application that would automatically disqualify them from being considered for the program? Christina: There is nothing that will automatically disqualify an applicant from consideration for law school. Clearly, schools have academic standards, so students will need to adjust their expectations for admission based on their past academic performance and test scores. Past serious infractions that could prevent a student from gaining admission to the bar must be disclosed fully. They will not necessarily prevent admission, but they must be dealt with honestly. VT: What about the Law School admissions process differs the most from undergraduate admissions? Christina: Law school applicants are older and more experienced than undergraduate applicants. As such, admissions committees are interested to see who they are, not just who they will become. They ask themselves, What has the student achieved? rather than What will the student achieve? VT: What kinds of things (experience, grades, etc.) might a student lack that would lead you to advise them not to apply? Christina: If a student does not know why he or she plans to apply to law school, I might advise him or her to gain more experience. Typically, the issue is more that a student is not articulating his or her interest well enough, and our team helps students understand and then express their motivation in their applications. But if a student clearly is not engaged in the process, it would be hard to help him or her effectively. VT: Is there anything you might see on a students application that would quickly put them ahead in the running? Christina: There is no one factor that will ensure a student is admitted to his or her law school of choice. An impressive GPA (typically, but not always) from a well-ranked undergraduate institution and high LSAT scores are requirements for admission to top law programs. But beyond that, students must differentiate themselves from the competition, because the competition is fierce at that level. I find the most compelling applicants know who they are and where they are going. They can express that in an engaging way in their application through their personal statement, as well as through the activities they have undertaken in school and in their personal lives. VT: What advice do you have regarding LSAT test prep? Christina: Prepare early; prepare often. The LSAT is a test of how well you know how to take the test. It takes time for a person to understand and acclimate to the psychology and pace of the test. A student who spends an hour each day studying for several months will be much more effective at taking the test than someone who crams for it in one month. VT: What do law school admissions officers look for in recommendation letters? Christina: Admissions officers seek letters of recommendation to get a fuller picture of the applicant, particularly from an intellectual and academic standpoint. What is a Rectangular Prism What is a Rectangular Prism? In geometry, a prism is a solid object which has identical bases with flat faces, and same cross-section throughout its length. A rectangular prism is a solid box-shaped 3-dimensional object whose faces are all rectangles. A rectangular prism has a total 6 flat faces and all angles are at right angles as shown in the figure below. A rectangular prism consists of 2 rectangular bases and 4 rectangular sides. The bases are congruent and parallel to each other. Since every prism is a polyhedron (solid with flat faces), hence it does not consist of any curved sides. The same is applied to a rectangular prism and hence it is also a polyhedron with no curved sides. A rectangular prism has 8 vertices, 6 faces and 12 edges as shown in the figure below. We can find plenty of examples of rectangular prisms in the world, including the very room we are sitting in. Some of the examples are skyscraper buildings, a room, a box etc. Diagonal of a Rectangular Prism: The diagonal of a rectangular prism is the line drawn to connect the opposite vertices. Finding the diagonal length is very useful in various calculations. We can calculate the diagonal of a rectangular prism if we know the measurements of the prisms length, width and the height. Let the length be = l, width = w, and height = h. Then the diagonal of a rectangular prism, d = (l2 + w2 + h2). Example: How much is the diagonal length of a rectangular prism whose length is 7m, width is 4m and height is 3m? Given that length l = 7m, width w = 4m and height, h = 3m. Diagonal of a rectangular prism, d = (l2 + w2 + h2). Hence applying the above formula, we get: d = (72 + 42 + 32). This gives us d = (49 + 16 + 9) = 74. Now, 74 can be approximated to its decimal value as 8.6m. Hence 8.6m is the diagonal length of the given rectangular prism! Lateral Area of a Rectangular Prism: Lateral Area of a rectangular prism is the area of the faces of the prism, excluding its bases. This implies that we actually consider the area of only 4 faces of the prism and do not calculate the area of the 2 bases of the prism. This only gives us the lateral area of the rectangular prism. We can find the lateral area of the rectangular prism using the formula as shown below: Lateral Area of a Rectangular Prism = Perimeter of the Base * Height L = P * h Since we are finding lateral area of a rectangular prism, hence the perimeter of the base is nothing but the perimeter of the base rectangle. We know that the perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of all its sides. This gives us that the Perimeter of a rectangle, P = 2l + 2w (where l = length and w = width) of the rectangular prism. Hence the Lateral Area of a Rectangular prism can now also be written as: Lateral Area of a Rectangular Prism = Perimeter of the Base * Height L = P * h L = (2l + 2w) * h Or L = 2lh + 2wh (l = length, w = width, h = height) Example: Calculate the lateral area of a rectangular prism if given that the length is 7m, width is 4m, and height is 3m. Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism: Surface area of a rectangular prism is the surface area of all the faces of the prism. Since surface area includes the area of all the 6 faces of the prism, hence this is also known as the Total Surface Area of a rectangular prism. In order to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism, we use the formula as shown below: Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism = Lateral Area + (2 * Area of the Base) S = L + (2 * B) Since the Lateral area is 2lh + 2wh, we can plug-in its formula in the place of L. Now, the area of the base is nothing but the area of the base rectangle. Area of a rectangle = length * width. Every major English-speaking MBA program requires applicants to take the GMAT. Top business schools such as Cornell, the London Business School and HEC Paris view your score as ‘very important’, and you’ll need at least a 680 or higher to be accepted. Standing out from the thousands of MBA applicants is difficult but the best way to help yourself is to prepare effectively. There isn’t a set way to prepare. Everyone has their own techniques and preferences. However, there are a few key things you should do so that you don’t end up wasting the $250 you paid to take the test. Study hard. You get what you put in so don’t expect to do well if you haven’t put in the hours of study. You can find practise exams on the MBA.com website or, like many applicants, you can get private tutoring. Relax. Your score is important but remember that it’s only one part of the MBA admissions process. You can further enhance your application with your essay or interview and there are cases of low-scoring candidates impressing in other ways. Arrive early. You can’t be too early, especially on test day. To prevent cheating, you have to go through various security checks and this takes time so if you arrive less than 15 minutes before your exam, don’t expect that you’ll start on time. It’s a good idea to make a trip to the test centre in advance so that you can figure out traffic and travel times. It can also calm you to know what the building looks like. Eat and sleep well. Last minute cramming and binge eating will hinder your chances of doing well. Remember that you’re not a teenage college student anymore and the GMAT isn’t your average test. Take care of your body and give your brain the best opportunity to perform to its optimum. Send out your results. You are allowed to send your results to five schools for free so make use of them and increase your chances by paying to send a few more. If you feel you haven’t done well, you can stop your results being sent to schools as soon as you’ve finished.
